The Surprise of a Lifetime: How Twins Completed Our Family
Share
After having three kids, we decided to go for one more and round out our family with four kids. We already had one boy and two girls, so we were hoping for another boy to balance everything out. Little did we know, life had a much bigger surprise in store for us.
We got pregnant, and Colleen went to her first ultrasound by herself as Josh stayed home with Melody, who was only three at the time. Colleen had done this three times before, so she kind of knew how the little gummy bear is supposed to look on the monitor. But she noticed something different this time and asked the technician about it. Without any pause or preparation, the technician blurted out, “You’re having twins.”
Colleen lost it (as you could imagine) and instantly started crying. The technician got the doctor but forgot to mention the twins. The doctor came in, saw Colleen’s state, and asked, “What’s wrong? Weren’t you trying to get pregnant?” Colleen responded with, “Yes, but I never thought we would have twins.” The doctor, then looking down at her file, apologized and said, “Oh my goodness, I didn’t even see that in here.” She then told Colleen that she needed to record her telling Josh when she got home.
I think the anticipation of Josh’s reaction is what got Colleen home from the appointment that day. Colleen pulled up to the house, and Josh met her outside the garage to see how everything went. She said everything was good and healthy and then handed Josh a stack of ultrasound images and started recording. Josh’s unfiltered and raw reaction was priceless. He went from confusion to shock to pure joy in a matter of seconds. It was a moment we’ll never forget.
Hard to believe that was over six years ago, and we can’t imagine our lives without Kent and Shane. The first five years were a blur, and I think we literally blacked out for most of them. Twins are hard, but they are a lot of fun. They bring double the trouble but also double the love and laughter. Our family feels perfectly balanced now, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Life with twins has been an adventure, full of unexpected twists and turns, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding. Watching Kent and Shane grow up alongside their older siblings has been a joy. Their bond as twins is something special, and their presence has brought a unique dynamic to our family.
As we reflect on our journey, we feel grateful for the surprises life has thrown our way. Sometimes, the best things come in pairs, and our twin boys are a testament to that. They have completed our family in ways we never could have imagined, and for that, we are eternally thankful.
Here’s to the chaos, the joy, and the endless love that comes with being a family of seven. We wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world
