Pack a Fold-Flat Tote

A foldable tote bag or packable daypack takes up almost no room in your luggage yet can save your trip multiple times over. It’s perfect for unplanned souvenir hauls, hauling groceries in countries with bag fees, or using as a beach or hiking bag.

Look for one with reinforced stitching so it can handle heavier loads, and make sure it folds into its own pouch so it disappears into your carry-on when not in use.

On the return trip, it can double as an extra carry-on to redistribute weight if your checked bag is over the airline limit. This one small item transforms from “optional extra” to “lifesaver” more often than you’d expect.
